- Students have four main ways to send belongings: carry them in luggage, send an air shipment or parcel, ship a small LCL consignment by sea, or buy things in the USA.
- Most students combine luggage with one air box. Sea freight suits larger loads, such as an off-campus apartment, but takes 65–95 days door to door by LCL.
- Plan around your I-20. F-1 students can enter the US no earlier than 30 days before the program start date, so a shipment that lands before you arrive needs someone to receive it.
- Everything sent as a shipment is declared to US Customs and Border Protection (CBP), and the rules depend on how you send it.

What are the ways to send belongings from India to the USA as a student?
| Option | Best for | Typical time | Watch out for |
|---|---|---|---|
| Luggage | Documents, clothes, laptop, medicines | With you | Airline weight limits and fees |
| Air shipment or parcel | Essentials for the first weeks | About 7-14 days door to door | Priced by weight; contents must be declared accurately |
| Sea freight (LCL) | Books, kitchenware, bedding, boxes beyond luggage | 65–95 days door to door | Consolidation adds 2-3 weeks, so it can arrive after term starts |
| Buy in the USA | Furniture, appliances, bulky items | Immediate | Higher upfront spend, but no |
Pikkol’s international parcel service covers personal belongings, kitchen utensils, paintings and idols for students and families abroad. For a larger load, see international relocation services.
Should you send a parcel by post or use a shipping company?
Check the current rules before you use the post. Since August 2025, the US has removed the duty-free threshold for postal imports, and India Post halted most US-bound postal shipments, accepting only letters, documents and small gifts. Other routes may be affected too, so confirm what is accepted before you pack. A moving or shipping company that clears goods through customs on your behalf avoids this problem. Read the customs, visa and documentation guide for how clearance works.
What should students ship, and what should they buy in the USA?
Worth carrying or shipping:
- Documents, I-20, transcripts, medical and vaccination records (carry these)
- Laptop, phone and chargers (carry these)
- Clothes you already own, plus a few ethnic outfits
- Basic kitchen items, if you will cook
- A few books and personal keepsakes
Usually better to buy in the USA:
- Furniture and mattresses
- Large appliances, since the USA runs on 120V/60Hz and most Indian 230V appliances need a transformer or won’t run properly
- Winter coats and boots
- Bedding and towels that fit US sizes
Many students rent furnished rooms or live on campus first, so there is little to ship. If your belongings stay in India for now, storage can hold them.
How much does it cost to send belongings to the USA as a student?
Costs depend on weight or volume. Pikkol’s indicative figures for the USA are about ₹3.3–4.7 lakh door to door for a full 1BHK by LCL (about 10.3 CBM), and about ₹1.38–2.12 lakh for roughly 250 kg of essentials by air. Most students ship far less than a 1BHK, so ask about minimum charges for small loads. Prices exclude duties, destination exam fees, storage and insurance. What customs paperwork do students need?
Shipments are declared to CBP, usually with Customs Form 3299 for unaccompanied articles. Under US regulations, household effects can enter free of duty if they were actually used abroad for at least a year and are not for sale. The rules refer to “residents or nonresidents,” but they don’t mention students specifically, so confirm your situation with Pikkol’s US partner. Plan for:
- Passport with your US visa, and your I-20
- A detailed English inventory with values, which Pikkol prepares from your packing list
- Bill of lading or air waybill
- Your US address and contact details
- An importer security filing (ISF), filed in advance for sea shipments
New, unused items can attract duty, so ship what you already use.
What can’t students send to the USA?
Leave these out, or check with us first:
- Animal-origin foods, including meat, many dairy items and ghee-based sweets
- Seeds, soil, plants and fresh produce
- Firearms and ammunition
- Prescription medicines beyond personal quantities (carry them in hand baggage)
- Hazardous goods such as pressurised cans, fuel and paint
Full details are on the restricted items section of the USA guide.
When should students send their belongings?
| When | What to do |
| After your visa and I-20 are confirmed | Decide what you will carry and what you will send |
| 8-10 weeks before your flight | Book a sea shipment, if you need one |
| 3-4 weeks before your flight | Book an air shipment or parcel |
| Before you fly | Finalise your inventory and documents |
| After you land | Buy basics, then read the settling-in guide |
A sea shipment can arrive after term starts, so send essentials by air and buy basics when you land. Insurance for laptops and valuables is covered in the risk guide for international moves and the high-value move guide.
Pikkol’s take
The most common student mistake is sending a full set of belongings that arrives weeks after the term has started, to an address that cannot receive it. Check your housing’s mail rules first. Carry what you need on day one, send one air box, and buy bulky items locally. For help planning, our settling-in services cover your first weeks.
Frequently asked questions
How do international students send belongings from India to the USA?
Students can carry items in luggage, send an air shipment for essentials, ship a small LCL sea shipment for bulkier items, or buy things in the USA. Most combine luggage with one air box.
Is it cheaper to ship belongings to the USA or buy new?
For a few boxes of clothes and books, shipping can make sense. For furniture, mattresses and appliances, buying in the USA is usually cheaper once freight and handling are counted.
How long does shipping from India to the USA take?
Air takes about 7–14 days door to door. Sea freight takes about 65–95 days by LCL.
How early can an F-1 student arrive in the USA?
No earlier than 30 days before the program start date on the I-20. A shipment can reach the US first, but someone needs to receive it.
Can I send food and spices to the USA as a student?
Animal-origin foods are restricted, including many dairy items and ghee-based sweets. Check the rules before packing any food.
Can I use Indian appliances in the USA?
Usually not without a transformer. The USA uses 120V/60Hz, and most Indian appliances are built for 230V/50Hz. Laptops and phone chargers are usually dual-voltage.
Do I pay customs duty on belongings shipped to the USA?
Used household goods owned and used abroad generally enter duty-free if declared correctly. New or unused items can attract duty.
